Safe Operating Procedure (SOP) – 1.7 Tonne Digger

Learn New Zealand safety standards for 1.7-tonne digger.

1. Purpose 

To establish procedures for the safe operation of a 1.7-tonne digger, ensuring compliance with New Zealand safety standards and regulations. 

2. Scope 

This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the operation, maintenance, and supervision of the 1.7-tonne digger. 

3. Responsibilities 

– Operators: Must be trained, competent, and authorized to operate the digger. 

– Supervisors: Ensure operators adhere to this SOP and conduct safety checks. 

– Site Managers: Ensure a safe work environment and compliance with all safety regulations. 

4. Applicable Standards 

– Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 

– WorkSafe New Zealand guidelines for operating mobile plant 

– Manufacturer’s operating manual 

5. Recommended Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – not supplied 

– Hard hat 

– Safety glasses 

– High-visibility clothing 

– Steel-capped boots 

– Gloves 

– Hearing protection (if required) 

6. Pre-Operational Checks 

– Conduct a walk-around inspection to identify any visible damage or leaks. 

– Check fluid levels (fuel, hydraulic oil, engine oil, coolant) and top up if necessary. 

– Inspect the condition of tracks and undercarriage. 

– Ensure safety devices and guards are intact and functional. 

– Check the area for hazards like overhead power lines, underground utilities, and uneven ground.

7. Starting the Digger 

– Enter the cab using designated handholds and steps to prevent slips and falls. 

– Fasten the seatbelt before starting the engine. 

– Ensure all controls are in the neutral position. 

– Turn the ignition key to start the engine, allowing it to warm up to operating temperature.

8. Operating the Digger 

– Operate at a safe speed and be aware of the swing radius. 

– Use gradual, smooth movements when using controls. 

– Avoid operating on steep slopes or unstable ground. 

– Keep the bucket low to the ground when moving to maintain stability. 

– Do not overload the bucket beyond its capacity. 

– Maintain clear communication with ground workers using hand signals or radios. 

– Ensure no personnel or obstacles are within the swing radius. 

9. Shutting Down the Digger

– Park on level ground if possible. 

– Lower the bucket and any attachments to the ground. 

– Place all controls in the neutral position. 

– Turn off the engine and remove the key. 

– Conduct a post-operation inspection for any signs of damage or issues. 

10. Emergency Procedures

– Follow the site-specific emergency plan. 

– Know the location of the nearest first aid kit and emergency exits. 

– Call 111 in an emergency 

11. Maintenance and Repairs 

– Only qualified personnel should perform maintenance and repairs.

12. Review and Updates 

– This SOP should be reviewed annually or whenever there are changes to equipment or work processes. 

– Updates should be communicated to all relevant personnel. 

13. Additional New Zealand-Specific Considerations

– Ensure compliance with any additional WorkSafe New Zealand requirements. 

– Implement site-specific safety measures as required by local regulations. 

– Conduct regular safety meetings and toolbox talks to reinforce safe operating practices.
